Relocation Depression is a Real Thing

Real talk here. Moving to Wichita Falls to a new home is stressful given the greatest scenario. You're exiting your residence--where you've made a life for yourself along with your family members--and starting once more in a unfamiliar location. Sure, the move on its own is exhilarating--an adrenaline rush which goes on for weeks or months while you identify a new house, load up the old one, and become settled with your loved ones into their new routines. 
 
Yet soon after the cartons are unpacked and you have figured out the perfect path to the dry cleaners, the new reality sets in--you're in a new place, and your friends and social life are back in your old area--the location you still think of as "home". And everything seems out of whack--there is a feeling of being misplaced, and you're not sure if it is an actual or subconscious place, but it's just wrong. It's not home.

These warning signs can be more than the post-move blues. It is possible that you've got something referred to as "relocation depression". Relocation depression is indeed a thing--the starting point is after all the craziness of the move simmers down--and should be considered seriously and addressed in the event that you are unable to shake it on your own.  

Indicators to Look out for

These are typically a few of the indicators to watch out for, the occurrence of some of these over a couple of week span indicates you need to acquire some professional help. 

You Are Unable To Get Out of Bed 

When you do, you're lethargic and really do not have the strength to get through the day. Insomnia can be another sign of depression; you're drained constantly, however you cannot go to sleep. Or you can sleep--12 hours at a time and you are still drained. 

Absence of Interest in Anything 

In your past home or town, you had your normal routine and your stuff--work, friends, interests--that loaded your weeks. Nowadays, you have your job, but your buddies couldn't come with you and it's tough to get passionate about your pastimes if, similar to a third-grader, you do not have anybody to play with. Adults needs good friends too, so don't feel bad or remorseful that you're a tad lonely. 

In case you just cannot get interested in anything--hobbies, your job, finding new buddies, interacting with family--odds are it's really a symptom of depression. Along with the blahs comes being unable to concentrate--if something may catch your consideration, it would not survive but a couple of minutes and you would zone out. 

Disinclination to Depart from the House 

The new home is your safe place, and you just don't want to leave it. Let's be honest, you have TV shows for binging, and social networking to check. Social networking is a double-edged sword because it enables you to keep up with acquaintances, but it can also support and abet in your keeping in rather than finding new friends.  

How you can Overcome Relocation Depression

There are certain things that can be done to remove the haze, so try these and see if you feel better. 

Get Some Exercise--Active people feel healthier, so get out and just go walking a couple of times a day. For those who have a dog it's a built-in excuse to get outside. Build on that outdoors time daily. 

Scale Back or Do away with Alcohol--This is a depressant, so it's advisable to steer clear of it until you are feeling better. 

Connect with People--Take a course or enroll in a newcomers group. Volunteer--extra hands and skills are frequently welcome. Just a few new acquaintances makes a huge difference. 

Consider Something New--Go to galleries, coffee houses, theater, restaurants--explore your new community and get to know it. Keeping busy is similar to exercise--it keeps the excitement moving along and you should have more energy. 

If these solutions do not help, look for a counselor. Relocation depression isn't a scam, and neglected, may get out of hand into something even worse. You understand yourself better than anyone, and in case things are not quite right, focus on your body and mind. Moving to Wichita Falls is considered one of life's most nerve-racking occasions, but it doesn't have to become a source of unhappiness or depression.
